The Puggle was first intentionally bred in the 1980s by Wisconsin breeder Wallace Havens, who crossed Pugs and Beagles to produce a small, friendly companion with a slightly longer snout than the Pug and a calmer disposition than the Beagle. Havens coined the name "Puggle" and registered it with the American Canine Hybrid Club in 2000, helping spark broader mainstream interest in hybrid dogs during the early 2000s.

The Puggle (Pug × Beagle) is a friendly, curious mix that softens the Pug’s breathing issues somewhat while adding the Beagle’s playful energy — scoring 80–93/100 in friendliness. Be prepared for significant vocal tendencies (65–82/100 barking), a food obsession that leads to obesity, and possible breathing concerns if the Pug’s flat-face traits come through.

Puggle Buyer's Guide

Common questions answered before you buy

A Puggle is a cross between a Pug (Charming · low-energy · friendly) and a Beagle (Curious · vocal · food-driven). The goal of this cross is to combine the best traits of both parents — but it's important to understand that results vary significantly from puppy to puppy, even within the same litter.

Moderately to heavily depending on the puppy. The shedding range for this cross is 48–68/100, with most puppies falling around 58/100. Regular brushing reduces loose hair around the home. Don't assume a mixed breed means low-shedding without checking which parent they take after.

Puggles typically weigh between 15–30 lbs. However, size can vary significantly depending on which parent the puppy takes after and the generation (F1, F1B, etc.). A smaller parent — particularly if one parent is a Miniature or Toy variant — will produce smaller offspring. Always ask breeders about the parent sizes, not just the breed average.

Mixed results. The Puggle trainability range of 48–66/100 means some puppies are highly trainable while others are considerably more stubborn. Don't assume a mixed breed is automatically easier to train than a purebred — it depends heavily on which parent traits dominate.

The Puggle typically lives 10–15 years. Hybrid dogs often benefit from "hybrid vigour" — a tendency for mixed breeds to be healthier than either purebred parent. However, they can still inherit health conditions from either parent line. Ask breeders about health testing on both parents (hips, eyes, heart, depending on the parent breeds), and schedule annual vet check-ups throughout your dog's life.

Yes — the Puggle is generally apartment-adaptable as long as their exercise needs are met. Daily walks and interactive play sessions (around 30 minutes of light-to-moderate exercise daily) are sufficient to keep them calm indoors. Mental stimulation — puzzle toys, training sessions — is equally important for this intelligent cross.
